Beat the winter blahs with Alumni Book Club

After all the holiday excitement and activity, sometimes January can be a bit of a downer.  Too cold for outdoor events, so you’re stuck inside?  We have the cure!   We’re bringing back our Book Club event!

The Alumni Association encourages alumni groups to present educational and cultural activities, so we’re combining those ideas into one activity.  We paired up with another alumni group, the Asian & Pacific Islanders Alumni, to present something educational with a splash of fun at the end.  We’re going to read the book, “Crying in H Mart,” by Michelle Zauner, a memoir about growing up Korean-American in Eugene, Oregon.  (A full description can be found below.)

You can find this relatively inexpensive book on Amazon or order it thru your nearest bookstore.  We will all try to complete reading it by March, and then the two alumni groups will get together for dinner to discuss.  You’ll get to meet a whole new group of alums, enjoy a great meal, and learn from an interesting discussion. Sometimes we are even able to invite the author to join us, (either in person or by Zoom)!

If you’re interested, just email us at OSUAlumniFranklinCounty@yahoo.com  to let us know, and we’ll add you to the list to contact when we schedule the dinner.  If we get enough people to join us, the Alumni clubs might even be able to cover the cost of the meal!

Below is a full description of the book.  We hope you will join us!

Synopsis:

A memoir about growing up Korean American, losing her mother, and forging her own identity.

Michelle Zauner tells of growing up one of the few Asian American kids at her school in Eugene, Oregon; of struggling with her mother’s particular, high expectations of her; of a painful adolescence; of treasured months spent in her grandmother’s tiny apartment in Seoul, where she and her mother would bond, late at night, over heaping plates of food.

As she grew up, moving to the East Coast for college, finding work in the restaurant industry, and performing gigs with her fledgling band–and meeting the man who would become her husband–her Korean-ness began to feel ever more distant, even as she found the life she wanted to live. It was her mother’s diagnosis of terminal cancer, when Michelle was twenty-five, that forced a reckoning with her identity and brought her to reclaim the gifts of taste, language, and history her mother had given her.

A Walk in Our ‘Shoe: 100 Years of Ohio Stadium

Over the past 100 years, thousands of fans have cheered The Ohio State University Buckeyes to victory in Ohio Stadium, affectionately known as the ‘Shoe. TBDBITL has brought audiences to their feet for Script Ohio, and families and friends have joyfully watched as their students became graduates in that same stadium. A Walk in Our ‘Shoe: 100 Years of Ohio Stadium celebrates this history of the Horseshoe. On view in the Thompson Library Gallery, the exhibit is presented by University Archives, and highlights include football uniforms and gear from the 1920s and 1930s, the dedication game day program from 1922, a reconstructed Fan Cave, Jim Tressel’s play calling sheets, and a Lego Ohio Stadium constructed by OSU Professor Paul Janssen

Our alumni club, along with the Delaware and Fairfield County clubs, have arranged for a guided tour of this special exhibit at the Main Library on Saturday, February 4 at 1:30 pm.

There is no cost to attend but you must pre-register.  Email your name, phone number, and the number of attendees you’re bringing to  OSUAlumniFranklinCounty@yahoo.com.

A confirmation will be sent with parking instructions and other details in late January.  For more information, email us or call Leyla at 614-847-9132.

Help Us Help The Dream Center

Here’s a different charitable collection program — this one takes place AFTER the holidays!

Organizations that help the less fortunate need assistance all year around, so we have chosen to assist The Dream Center this January and February with their mission to provide warmth and care for their homeless clients.  If you would like to learn more about the Dream Center, visit their website:  www.columbusdreamcenter.org.

We will collect items during all of January, with the goal of delivering our collection in early February.

Here are some of the items that are most requested at the Dream Center this season:

  • Blankets (fairly heavy, and fairly long so that they cover someone completely)
  • Warm gloves
  • Ponchos
  • Socks (both regular socks and warmer socks)
  • Toilet paper
  • Deodorant (travel size or mini size)
  • Shampoo (travel size or mini size)
  • Laundry detergent
  • Tents

You are welcome to deliver your donation to any club meeting or event, between now and the end of January, or deliver directly to the home of our Community Service co-chair Ron Kenat, 3962 Winding Oaks Drive, Columbus 43228.  Reach out to Ron to make alternative delivery plans, or if you have any questions:  614-420-2736 or Abelcom123@yahoo.com.

Thank you for helping us share our gifts with others in need!

Cocktails at the Conservatory – November 3

We’re excited to announce our joining with the Franklin Park Conservatory for an event this coming November 3. “Cocktails at the Conservatory” is an opportunity for our alumni to participate in the facility’s horticultural, educational and social mission while providing a unique, educational happy hour set in their gorgeous gardens.

Cocktails at the Conservatory is the final event of the series this year of themed cocktail parties with a rotating cast of local drink & food vendors, live music, activities and more. Five dollars from every ticket sold will also support the Conservatory’s mission. Programs like Teen Corps – which teaches local teens skills through hands-on gardening, urban farming and running a Farmers Market stand – benefit immensely from support gained at these events.

For tickets to this event, please go directly to the conservatory’s website to order.

FOOTBALL TICKET RAFFLE

It’s time for our annual raffle of our Presidents Club football tickets!  The OSU Alumni Club of Franklin County is making all of our seats available again this year in our raffle. All money raised goes directly to our Scholarship fund to help a future Buckeye.

These are great seats again this year, in section 16A with seatbacks. Tickets for the raffle are $5 for 1 chance, $25 for 6 chances or $50 for 13 chances. Order now!  If your name is drawn, you will have the right to purchase our seats at face value.

We are not allowed to sell the raffle tickets on our website. Send checks (payable to “OSU Alumni Club of Franklin County”) to Jerry Vance, 5625 Pleasant Hill Drive, Hilliard, OH 43026. There will be two drawings:  One on August 26 for the first 5 games of the season, and the second drawing on October 12 for the last three games.  Everyone is welcome to attend the drawings. All Home Games Are Available

Doing Our Part to Keep Columbus Beautiful!

Our community service project this fall will be held on Saturday, October 15 (bye week, no football) at Tuttle Park, 240 W. Oakland Avenue, Columbus 43201, just north of campus.  This conservation project will take place from 9 am to 12 noon.  It is mostly focused on invasive species removal to clear the walking paths, but litter clean-up is also an option.  We may be joined by other groups of OSU Alumni.

This is a family-friendly event, and we know many high school students are required to perform community service events during the school year, so feel free to bring them along!  Also, volunteers will be treated to lunch at Jack & Benny’s at the end of the project!

If you are able to participate, please reply to Karyn Johnson to sign up (englanke@yahoo.com).  We need to give a headcount to the Parks department.  Karyn will send you a map with directions and answer any other questions you may have.

You should plan to bring your own gardening / outdoor work gloves.  The Recreation and Parks Department will provide all other supplies and tools. They also strongly recommend you wear LONG pants (not shorts), solid shoes (no open toes) that may get muddy, and bring sunscreen and bug spray.

Please print out the attached waiver and complete it before the event.  You can return it by email to Karyn Johnson (englanke@yahoo.com) or bring it with you to the event.  Thank you for supporting our Community Service efforts!
