Exam Week Goodie Bags – Save your Halloween Candy!!

Did you get too much candy when you went trick-or-treating?  Or do you have leftovers because not enough children came to visit you?  We have a great use for these goodies!!

The Franklin County OSU Alumni Club will be putting together goodie bags again this year for a group of students in one of the dorms.  Candy, gum, pencils, any little trinkets you think a college kid would appreciate while studying for fall semester exams — bring them to us!

We will collect items at our November meeting, or you can contact us to arrange a drop off or pick up.  Then we’ll choose a night to pack the bags, and another night to deliver them to the dorms.

You are welcome to participate in any of the three steps — gathering supplies, packing the bags, or delivering.  Just email us at osualumnifranklincounty@yahoo.com  and let us know what you can do.

Two of our scholarship recipients will be participating in this project, so its a great opportunity for you to get to meet some great students!
Contact today and let us know what you can do!

BUCKEYE BOOK COMMUNITY

The Franklin County OSU Alumni Club has once again been given the
opportunity to participate in the Buckeye Book Community for this summer/fall.
If you are interested in participating, please contact Jessica
Kohlschmidt by email at osustatalum09@yahoo.com or by phone at 614-946-2614 to
obtain a copy of this year’s book.

A full description of
the reading program is below, along with a synopsis of the book itself, and an
opportunity to attend the author’s presentation on campus.  The group
discussion will be held on campus with a selected group of students, prior to
the author’s appearance.  It is a great way to connect with the incoming
students!
Jessica will distribute
books at the alumni club meeting on July 13.
  If you cannot
attend, you can make other arrangements with her to obtain one.
Each summer all first year students complete
their first college assignment by participating in the Buckeye Book Community;
they are given a selected book during orientation.  Upper
class students, staff and faculty are also encouraged to read the book, and we
want to offer this book opportunity to you all, as part of our Buckeye
Community as well!

The book for the 2016-2017 year is The Other Wes Moore Two
kids named Wes Moore were born blocks apart within a year of each other. Both
grew up fatherless in similar Baltimore neighborhoods and had difficult
childhoods; both hung out on street corners with their crews; both ran into
trouble with the police. How, then, did one grow up to be a Rhodes Scholar,
decorated veteran, White House Fellow, and business leader, while the other
ended up a convicted murderer serving a life sentence?  Wes Moore, the
author of this fascinating book, sets out to answer this profound question. In
alternating narratives that take readers from heart-wrenching losses to moments
of surprising redemption, The Other Wes Moore tells the story of a generation
of boys trying to find their way in a hostile world.
Our Alumni Club will organize a group
discussion with a group of students during early Fall semester. If you request
a book from us, we would like you to participate in the discussion group as
well.  If you have any questions, please contact Jessica.

SCOONIE PENN to be Featured Speaker at Banquet

ScooniePenn James “Scoonie” Penn, star of the 1999 Buckeye Basketball team that went to the Final Four, was our guest speaker at the Franklin County OSU Alumni Club annual banquet on Wednesday, May 11.

The banquet also recognized our newest scholarship winner and celebrated the accomplishments of the club throughout the past year.

Scoonie is a two-time NCAA All-American and Ohio State University Hall of Fame basketball player. He played two seasons for the Ohio State Buckeyes, leading them to their first Final Four appearance in more than 20 years. He finished his Buckeye career as the all-time leader in three-point shooting. After his playing years where completed, Scoonie tapped into his passion as an entrepreneur and a motivational speaker, using his life’s experiences to motivate youth, and to deliver a corporate message of success. Currently, Scoonie can be found working as a basketball analyst for a number of television and radio stations as well as CEO of POWR Management.   He is also the recipient of numerous community and sports achievement awards.

RONALD McDONALD HOUSE LUNCH

The Ronald McDonald House helps families of sick children all year around, providing food and housing during their children’s illness. The Franklin County OSU Alumni Club supports these efforts as well as other community services. Please consider helping those in need on Saturday, April 23, as we provide lunch for a day.
There are 2 ways to help: Sponsor a portion of the meal, and/or join us that day to prepare and serve the food. Right now we are asking you to “Save the Date” to help us serve. If you are able to help prepare, serve, or clean-up on that day, please contact Ron Kenat, abelcom123@yahoo.com or by phone at 614-420-2736. We need some people starting at 10 am to prepare, some to serve between 11:30 am and 1:30 pm, and some to clean up.

If you are unable to help us serve, but you wish to contribute to the lunch, then sponsoring a food item is the easy way to go! Various donation amounts will help us supply a healthy lunch of sandwiches, salads, fruit, and beverages. Choose an item to sponsor and send us your corresponding gift – we will do the shopping!

I would like to sponsor:
# Item Total:
___ Sandwiches @ $5 each _______
___ lbs of potato salad @ $4 each _______
___ lbs of fruit @ $6 each _______

Franklin County OSU Alumni Club
